Watershed Wonders Kits Now Available
One of the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards (SCCWS) longest running, and most well-known program is Froghoppers. Starting in 2005 this program took the message of watershed stewardship to over 7,000 students in southwest Saskatchewan. In 2020 and 2021 school and camp closures and restrictions on gatherings severely limited our ability to take the Froghoppers program to students in our watershed.
To continue its educational programming, the SCCWS looked for other opportunities to spread the word about watershed stewardship. Last fall the SCCWS started working with other watershed stewardship groups in Southern Saskatchewan to assemble watershed education kits that could be delivered to schools and youth groups. The result of this work is the Watershed Wonders Education Kits. These kits contain all the information and activities required for students up to Grade 6 to learn about watershed health and the steps they and their families can take to improve their watershed.
There are three different Watershed Wonders kits:
• Beaver Tails and Cattails
This kit teaches children about the animals that live in the watershed and how to identify native and invasive plants.
Activities in this Kit include:
Animal Tacking
Invasive Sheriff
Invasive Plant Board Game
• Watershed and Me
This kit teaches children about the watershed, the importance of watershed health and the connection and impact we have on our landscape.
Activities in this kit include:
Watershed Model
Cathy Cattail
• Getting our feet wet
This kit teaches children about wetlands, the importance of riparian areas and why the beaver and other animals are important to our watershed
Activities in this kit include:
Buffer it
Eager Beaver
Macromania
Some of the comments that we have received from teachers who have used the kits include:
• Students enjoyed the kits and took away an important message from each activity.
• Students are more aware of the watershed and the role they and their family play in its health after completing the activities in the kits.
• Students liked the animals especially the beaver skull and pelts and the animal tracking exercise.
• Would recommend the kits for other schools and youth groups to use to learn more about our watershed.
These kits are an excellent resource and provide many hours of activities for children These kits are not only for classrooms or camps, but are also an awesome resource for kid’s groups, clubs, and home schoolers.
These kits are available upon request from the SCCWS. Please contact us at kevin.sccws@gmail.com or call 306-770-4607. The Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards would like to thank Plains Midstream Canada and Water Security Agency for their funding of the Watershed Wonders Education Kits project.
