What is the Saskatchewan Water Quality Index?

The Saskatchewan Water Quality Index is an easy-to-understand tool that summarizes and communicates complex water quality data to a variety of people - from managers to the general public. The index will be calculated for each of 4 water uses described in the Saskatchewan Water Quality Objectives: protection of aquatic life and wildlife, recreational use, crop irrigation and livestock watering. Using the index, we will be able to produce a number between 0 (worst water quality) and 100 (best water quality) for each possible water use and each of the sampling sites in the watershed. The value of the index at various locations will fall within a certain water quality rating for each water use.
These ratings can then be compared to answer the specific questions addressed by the monitoring program.
